Georges Perec, Species of Spaces and Other Pieces, p.11 (originally written in 1974) Published in Penguin Classics 2008.
I inhabit my sheet of paper. What would this mean in a screen based world of monitors and browsers? How could one inhabit a browser window, and moreover write in its margins? Perec knew the spatial dramaturgy of the book; on the same page at the bottom he calls attention to the beauty of the footnote. It is not just extra information but a practice of space which exposes logic, hierarchy and marginality. These places exist on every webpage. It is the rollover title that appears when the cursor hovers over an image, the title running across the browser window and the invisible messages written in (and through) the source.
